Press Release - Cantwell Wins First Debate in Spokane

Candidates Head to Spokesman-Review for Fourth Face-to-Face Meeting

Today at their first debate and third face-to-face meeting, Senator Cantwell won the debate. Her closing statement speaks for itself.

Here is Cantwell's closing statement in its entirety:

"Thank you. I want to say that I know my opponent has thrown out accusations about my voting record. I would just ask you as Rotarians to look at the four-way test and see if it is fair, if it is accurate and it is beneficial to all. Because I think it's very important to understand these issues.

"I will just tell you this and the viewers here in Eastern Washington: I grew up in a working class Irish Catholic family, not unlike some of the neighborhoods here right in Spokane. And that's what gave me the courage to say that I was going to stand up and fight for you in Washington, D.C., to continue to make these issues, health care, education, the war on terrorism, solving some of our nation's toughest problems my priority.

"I've never shrunk from standing up to the biggest bullies in Washington, D.C., and I haven't been bought off by their various claims of what to do for them. I am your representative. And I hope you'll give me the chance in the next six years to continue to work for all of Washington State but particularly here in Eastern Washington."

After taking questions from the Spokane Rotary, Cantwell and McGavick will head for their fourth face-to-face meeting, an hour-and-a-half with the Spokesman Review's editorial board, to be broadcast live on the paper's website at http://www.spokesman-review.com/.
