Governor Mark Warner to Join Senator Titus in Examining Homeland Security Issues

Five years after the tragic events of 9/11, homeland security issues remain at the forefront of the American consciousness, and states' preparation to deal with ever more sophisticated threats is critical to the future. Mark Warner, immediate past governor of the state of Virginia, will join Nevada State Senator and gubernatorial candidate Dina Titus in examining preparedness and security issues in the post 9/11 era. The two will hold a joint news conference on Wednesday, September 6 at 1:00 p.m., on the 64th floor of the Riviera Hotel and Casino (2901 Las Vegas Boulevard, South).

Nevada is a focal point for homeland security issues, as one of the world's foremost tourism and travel destinations, and the site of Hoover Dam, the Nevada Test Site, Nellis Air Force Base and the proposed nuclear repository at Yucca Mountain. Warner and Titus will discuss lessons learned from other states and important initiatives for the future of homeland security in Nevada and across the U.S.

"Our state is uniquely positioned to make a real difference in the future security of the nation," said Titus, "but we must utilize our assets and ensure Nevada has the resources needed going forward. Federal dollars have been cut from our Homeland Security budget, many of our National Guard have been deployed to Iraq and are not available for their primary duty at home, and many first responders have antiquated communication equipment. These are critical issues which must be resolved. The future of our state and our nation is at stake."

"I was the first Governor elected after 9/11," said Governor Warner. "I watched the Pentagon in Virginia burn from the roof of my campaign office. During my Administration, we made substantial investments in an interoperable first responder radio system that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security cites a model. Virginia was one of three states recognized by Trust for America's Health as prepared for a bio-terror incident or mass outbreak of disease. Dina Titus gets it. She understands the complex security issues that Americans face and she has the right ideas to make Nevada a safer and more productive state."
