Titus Looks Ahead to the General Election

On the heels of a dramatic primary victory, gubernatorial nominee Senator Dina Titus at an afternoon news conference looked ahead to an exciting general election, thanking supporters for their hard work and dedication in an old-fashioned, grassroots campaign. She observed that the general election campaign will present a "clear and stark contrast" between the candidates, and citing the great benefit to Nevada voters, immediately challenged Congressman Jim Gibbons to a series of debates.

"Though our records speak for themselves, in order to make a truly informed choice in November, Nevadans also deserve the chance to hear from both candidates, side by side, discussing the issues that matter most," Titus said. "I hope that Congressman Gibbons will join me in some lively and engaging dialogue for the benefit of Nevada voters. With only weeks before the general election, this dialogue needs to begin as soon as possible."

Senator Titus pointed out several key issues important to all Nevadans where she and Congressman Gibbons have dramatically different views. For example:

Ø Education: Titus has consistently supported smaller classes in our schools and pushed for all-day kindergarten.

The congressman, by contrast, supported "No Child Left Behind" without adequate funding for local school districts and voted against class-size reduction and mandatory kindergarten while he was in the Nevada Legislature.

Ø Energy: Titus has advanced renewable energy as an affordable alternative to high-priced utility rates and as governor will appoint a tough Public Utilities Commission to prevent price gouging.

The congressman voted for $8 billion in tax breaks to energy companies while opposing funding to help lower-income families with their utility bills.

Ø Government ethics: Titus championed ethics reform in the Nevada Legislature and as governor will institute a 12-point plan for ethics reform, including banning all gifts from lobbyists and tightening financial disclosure rules.

The congressman voted to weaken ethics rules in the House of Representatives and voted against a special panel to recommend measures restoring public confidence in the Federal body.

Ø Lower-cost prescription drugs: Titus promoted legislation to make it easier for seniors to obtain less expensive mail-order prescription drugs from Canadian pharmacies.

The congressman opposed a measure to allow importation of Canadian prescription drugs.

Ø Environment: Titus has fought on behalf of all Nevadans to protect the Red Rock National Conservation Area and other natural state treasures.

The congressman, just last year, received a zero rating from the League of Conservation Voters and claimed that the threat of mercury contamination in our rivers and streams was "overblown".

Titus also looked forward to building the team that will take her campaign to the next level and carry it to victory in November, today announcing the addition of Hilarie Grey as statewide Campaign Communications Director. Grey, who most recently served as Director of Public Affairs for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, is one of the state's most experienced public sector communicators.

"Hilarie's energy, creativity and experience will be tremendous assets to this campaign as we move into our next phase," Titus said.
