Capito Continues Support of Efforts to Immediately Secure Our Borders

WASHINGTON - Stressing the urgent need for the federal government to continue doing everything in its power to seal and secure our borders in order to stop illegal immigration, Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) today voted for three major pieces of border security legislation.

"A nation without borders is not a nation," said Rep. Capito. "For too long, we have not paid attention to the battle being waged on our southern border. That battle is real, and we must do everything in our power to win it. The federal government has the duty to protect our citizens by securing our borders. Measures approved today represent another step towards achieving that important goal."

The measures approved in the House of Representatives today, the Border Tunnel Prevention Act (H.R. 4830), the Immigration Law Enforcement Act (H.R. 6095), and the Community Protection Act (H.R. 6094) represent bills that were developed following more than 20 field hearings held by House committees in the months of July and August that examined the issues of border security and illegal immigration.

Today's action comes on the heels of last week's House approval of legislation that authorized the construction of more than 700 miles of multi-layered reinforced fencing along the southwest U.S. border.

Citing the recent arrest of two illegal immigrants in Randolph County, one of them, Leon Lugo Andrade, the alleged killer of a Texas minister, Rep. Capito added that illegal immigration has landed on West Virginia's doorstep. "This is no longer an issue that only concerns states along our southern border. Illegal immigration is an issue that affects all Americans, including West Virginians, and it is a problem that I am committed to working on until it is fixed."
