U.S. Representative John Boozman (R-AR) announced his co-sponsorship of H.R. 6096, The Disabled Warriors' Family Education Act of 2006.
The bill was introduced today by House Veterans' Affairs Committee Chairman Stephen Buyer (R-IN). The bipartisan bill includes Boozman, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity, the subcommittee's ranking member, Rep. Stephanie Herseth (D-SD) and ranking committee member Rep. Lane Evans (D-IL) as original co-sponsors.
This bill will allow spouses and dependent children to access their Survivors' and Dependents' Education Assistance, under Chapter 35 of Title 38, U.S.C., prior to the severely injured servicemember being discharged from active duty.
"We owe a debt of gratitude not only to our servicemembers in harm's way around the world protecting our freedoms, but to the families who remain at home - especially the spouses who keep the family unit together," Boozman said. "There are cases where the spouse of a disabled veteran becomes the sole breadwinner of the family. It is important we are there as a country for the families and give them the tools and access to increase their opportunity for success in the job market.
"I am proud to work with the Chairman and my friends from across the aisle on the Veterans' Committee on this very important legislation," Boozman added. "It is my hope the full Congress will take a page from us and pass H.R. 6069 in a quick, bi-partisan manner."
