Statement of Governor Warner on Hurricane Isabel Preparedness in the Commonwealth

RICHMOND — Governor Mark R. Warner issued the following statement at 6:30 p.m. on Virginia's preparations for Hurricane Isabel. The Governor conducted a conference call with Hampton Roads local government administrators and elected officials in Tidewater at 6 p.m. to discuss statewide preparations and hear local questions and concerns.

"The slowing and changing track of the storm throughout the day allows us more time to consider our options on any possible evacuations of low-lying tidal areas. However, central and western Virginia could now be at greater risk. People across the Commonwealth should stay tuned to their local media throughout the day Wednesday for any vital instructions from either state or local government. This remains a dramatic and dangerous storm, and we will take all necessary precautions.

"I would like to commend state and local emergency planners and responders. There has been a high level of coordination among jurisdictions and with the U.S. military.

"Virginians should continue to review their own personal preparedness for a major storm with potential for power outages that could last for several days."
