Chafee Defers to Bush, Sits on the Sidelines, and Says His Opinion Doesn't Matter

Cranston, R.I. - As a group of military publications unveiled an editorial in support of firing Defense Secretary Don Rumsfeld, Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Sheldon Whitehouse called on Lincoln Chafee to explain why he continues to defer to the President and won't call on the Defense Secretary to step down.

"Lincoln Chafee's made it clear that he believes it should be up to George Bush whether Don Rumsfeld - the architect of this disastrous war in Iraq - should stay or go," Whitehouse said. "Bush has shown no sign that he understands that we're on the wrong course in Iraq, but Linc Chafee still says his voice doesn't matter and that we should trust the President to make the right decision. He still hasn't explained why. If Lincoln Chafee believes his voice doesn't matter in Washington, then Rhode Island needs another Senator alongside Jack Reed who is going to make his voice heard loud and clear."
