Latest news: Klobuchar touts health care, tax credit plans during St. Cloud stop

Democratic U.S. Senate hopeful Amy Klobuchar toured St. Cloud's Whitney Senior Center today and was expected to visit Sauk Rapids on a campaign stop through Central Minnesota.

The Hennepin County Attorney visited with senior citizens and people with disabilities, including a discussion with members of the Brain Injury Association of Minnesota, the largest and longest-running support group for people with traumatic brain injury and their families in Minnesota.

Klobuchar touted her proposal to extend tax credits to middle-income families with dependents and deal with a gap in the new Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage known as the "doughnut hole" by collecting more tax revenue from companies and individuals with offshore bank accounts and rolling back income tax cuts on the top 1 percent of income earners to Clinton-era levels.

"We need to stop letting the drug companies write health care and drug laws in Washington and start letting Medicare negotiate with them for better deals like the Veterans Administration does," she said. "We need to be following the North Star, not the Lone Star, to get ahead."
