Velázquez Statement on Health of 9/11 First Responders

NEW YORK - Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-N.Y.) today released the following statement during a press event on the health of Ground Zero clean-up workers, Lower East Side residents and first responders with 9/11 related illnesses:

"When our nation was under attack it was first responders, 9/11 workers and local residents that not only saved lives, but also ensured the recovery of our neighborhoods and City. Yet, it is five years later and our federal government has failed to provide the assistance that these dedicated men and women need in order to recover their own health and well-being.

"The least that our federal government can do is to assure that these first responders and 9/11 workers have access to the medical care they need in order to move on with a healthy life. These individuals have expressed nothing but generosity and dedication to both our City and nation - in return they deserve security and care. That is what we must ensure they are given today."
