AUSTIN — A McAllen attorney and a Seguin bar owner on Friday filed to run against U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Laredo, for his redrawn Congressional seat that extends into Hidalgo County.

Cuellar said he takes both candidates seriously, but is confident he can win his seat. He was in Hidalgo and Starr counties on Fri-day talking to elected officials and residents.

"We feel extremely confident that we are going to win that race," Cuellar said during a phone interview. "The advantage is for the incumbent, but I'm not going to take that for granted."

A panel of three federal judges redrew his and other Congressional districts in Texas in order to comply with a Supreme Court ruling that said the districts around Laredo were unfair to Latino voters.

The district includes Laredo, Western Hidalgo County and part of Central Texas.
