Bush Administration Katrina Failures Still Evident

On One Year Anniversary, Says DeLauro

Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3) today issued the following statement on the one year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

"As the nation remembers the one year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina today, we reflect on the past year and the recovery effort still underway in the Gulf Coast region. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the victims of this natural disaster and their families.

"Today, more than one-third of debris from the hurricane remains in New Orleans . An estimated 278,000 workers are still displaced by the storm and 23 percent of them remain unemployed and only 3/5 of homes that remain in New Orleans have electricity service. More than 60,000 homeowners of the Gulf Coast region still await their insurance settlements.

"The Bush administration failed at the outset by ignoring the warnings of the impact a storm this size could have on the region and was ill prepared to address the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. With the rebuilding still incomplete, I call on the president to show the leadership the Gulf Coast and our country needs. It is not acceptable to lose an American city and a large portion of its citizens."
