McConnell Statement On The Democrats' Rumsfeld Amendment

Wednesday, September 6, 2006

‘The Democrat leadership has shown, once again, that it is not serious about finishing the mission'

WASHINGTON—U.S. Senate Majority Whip Mitch McConnell made the following statement today regarding the Democrat leadership's amendment on Secretary Rumsfeld:

"The Democrat leadership, whose plan for Iraq is retreat, has shown once again that it is not serious about finishing the mission. If this amendment shows anything, it's that the Democrat leadership has no confidence in our ability to succeed against al Qaeda. I strongly disagree with their assessment.

"It must be discouraging to our troops and to our generals when all of their work is second-guessed by this kind of ploy, and it is in no way helpful in prosecuting the war. The Democrat amendment may rile up the liberal base, but it won't kill a single terrorist or prevent a single attack.

"Don Rumsfeld led the effort to liberate 50 million people from tyranny, and has been a key leader in the efforts to secure our nation. By going on offense, he's helped to ensure that we have not been attacked here at home in the five years since 9/11. He is an excellent Secretary of Defense"
