Gov. Rounds proclaims September 6 as Olga Mortrude Day

PIERRE, S.D. - Gov. Mike Rounds has proclaimed September 6, 2006 as Olga Mortrude Day in South Dakota in honor of her 110th birthday.

"Olga Mortrude served the children of this state for over 40 years as a kindergarten teacher," said Gov. Rounds. "I join all of her friends and family in extending our best wishes to her as she celebrates her 110th birthday."

Whereas, The state of South Dakota is the home of Olga Mortrude, and we are richer because Olga lives among us; and,

Whereas, Olga was born September 6, 1896, at Luverne, Minnesota, the youngest of three children; and,

Whereas, Olga graduated from Luverne Public School, attained her teacher training from Winona State College and continuing education credits from Northern State College, and then taught kindergarten in the Aberdeen school system for over 40 years; and,

Whereas, The South Dakota Health Care Foundation has named Olga the "2006 Centenarian of the Year" in South Dakota; and,

Whereas, Olga resides in the Aurora-Brule Nursing Home at White Lake, South Dakota, and will observe her 110th Birthday with all the good wishes, fanfare and celebration such a milestone warrants, as her friends and relatives gather to honor her and celebrate her life and the camaraderie of the day; and,

Whereas, It is fitting and proper for the Governor to make note of this milestone in the life of a woman who has lived an exemplary life for all to emulate:

Now, Therefore, I, M. Michael Rounds, Governor of the state of South Dakota, do hereby proclaim September 6, 2006, as
