CLYBURN CALLS FOR CLEAN VOTE ON MINIMUM WAGE

Washington, D.C.- House Democratic Caucus Chairman James E. Clyburn released the following statement today calling for a clean minimum wage vote before the House of Representatives adjourns for the August recess.

"Before we leave Washington for August recess, the Congress has the opportunity to raise the federal minimum wage from $5.15 to $7.25. This would be the first time in ten years that the minimum wage has been increased but the Republican leadership is trying to lace the bill with poison pills and sweeteners for special interests that will prevent this important legislation from becoming law."

"The bottom line is that five million low-income Americans working full time for minimum wage, deserve a raise. Will Republicans show once again that they ignore the needs of honest hard-working salaried Americans? Or will they allow this critical vote today? The Republican leadership is out of touch with those Americans who work forty-hour weeks earning incomes below the poverty level and can't make ends meet—instead they listen to the wealthiest Americans, or those with special interests who work overtime to sabotage the bill's passage."

"An honest day's work, deserves and honest day's pay, and this Congress must make one of its final actions before we adjourn, raising the minimum wage. Democrats are fighting for a new direction for working Americans including better jobs for better pay. ."
