The fundamental political question of our time is whether we will succumb finally and irretrievably to Socialism, with its inevitable slow deterioration of culture, diminution of individual liberty, and empowerment of the angry self righteousness of those who would steal their sustenance from others; or will we chose the infinitely more prosperous path of individual responsibility for our lives and happiness. The burden of destructive human behavior should fall squarely on the individual engaging in it. The reward of the brilliant should be the fruit of his idea.

Local:
We need more competition in the provision of government services, while reducing the size of government at all levels by discontinuing and privatizing current programs. Too often we seek panacea solutions to problems that should be logically analyzed and practically approached. The constant struggle to force people into public transportation when the vast majority prefers the flexibility of automobiles is a shining example.

The good intentions of those who sell welfare and wealth redistribution inadvertently put an artificial strain upon the environment. The reality of these programs is that they are pyramid schemes. Thus in order for our society to afford the weight of the tax consumers we must suffer a continual replenishment of the bottom of the pyramid, or the whole thing collapses. Thus, both parties favor heavy imigration lest the pyramid fall. This has led to a rapid population growth and a consequent strain upon our environment. I am not against imigration, but I am against population growth for the sole reason of sustaining the welfare/social security pyramid. I am an optimist: I believe we can have a prosperous local economy and still maintain our district's natural splendor by placing ourselves back on sound economic footing.

Norm Dicks is a creature of a different era: an era when the Democrat Party controlled the White House and both branches of Congress. That is no longer the case and has not been for some time. Consequentially, Congressman Dick's actual power and influence have waned as the Republican Party has ascended to national control. Our district seems caught in a time warp; Mr. Dicks claims to "work for jobs" but his liberal democratic bent is to only work for government jobs. The private sector gets short shrift. His influence is suspect despite the traditional politician's charade of taking credit for any morsel of federal spending in the district. Perhaps Congressman Dicks should also take credit for Boeing's relocation to Chicago.

The Democrat Party machines have shown a rare incompetence locally. From the Brame killing to the Tacoma City manager's attempt to drive home on his rims we have seen signs of arrogance and incompetence.

National and International:
Ultimately the strength, safety and prosperity of a society depend upon the strength and innovative capacity of its economy and of its people. This can only be maximized by the adoption of free market solutions at every level of human endeavor. We must reduce the role and reach of the Federal Government. That means less taxation, fewer government services and an end to wealth redistribution schemes.

Economic progress really depends upon innovation and the advancement of the human circumstance. That implies individual responsibility and individual genius. We cannot discourage the genius that lies within so many of our people by continually setting an internal brake upon their thoughts in the interest of political correctness. By so discouraging free speech the politically correct crowd and the sneering liberals of the northeast media monopoly have created a climate such that professional tennis star Martina Navratilova once said she felt that in some ways she had more freedom of speech when she lived in communist eastern Europe than she enjoys in the United States.

The Federal government, through the price fixing mechanism that is Medicare, has so thoroughly perverted the health care industry as to render it immune from the rigor and efficiency of a free market. Moreover, the prepaid insurance system that now exists has insufficient market incentives to lower the price and raise the quality of medical care. Unless these problems are addressed, we are heading for a real crisis.

Clean air and water and untainted land are our birthright: appropriate legal concepts should be implemented to place the true and full cost of pollution on the polluter.

The Federal Courts must be weakened in preference to the Congress and the right of the citizen to participate in political solutions.

We must continue to work with the peace and justice loving nations of the world to increase our mutual security in uncertain times, while being careful not to become too deeply embroiled in all of the world's varied and complex problems.
