Amy Klobuchar's Statement on the Middle East Violence

Tuesday, 25 July 2006

U.S. Senate candidate and Hennepin County Attorney Amy Klobuchar released the following statement on the escalation of violence in the Middle East:

"Like the United States and other sovereign nations, Israel has the right and duty to defend itself from aggression and is justified in taking necessary steps to protect its people from the violent acts of Hezbollah and Hamas. The recent escalation of hostilities is a tragedy and the United States must do everything possible to work with its allies and seek a swift resolution."

Amy Klobuchar today also called on Congress to take action condemning Hamas and Hezbollah, calling for the cessation of terrorist attacks on Israel and renewing the implementation of the United Nations Resolution 1559 which requires the Lebanese government to disarm Hezbollah.

"There must be no question about Israel's right to exist in safety. It is critical that we send a clear message to Iran, Syria and others to condemn these attacks and exert influence over terrorist organizations."
