Klobuchar Calls for an End to Offshore Tax Havens
Tuesday, 01 August 2006

Commenting on a newly released U.S. Senate report detailing the extent and cost of tax cheating by many wealthy Americans, Hennepin County's chief prosecutor and U.S. Senate candidate Amy Klobuchar issued the following statement:

"In my office, when we're dealing with a white collar case, we always say follow the money and you'll find the bad guy. Today, we learn that America is losing $70 billion dollars a year because of offshore tax dodges. The bad guys in this case are the ones who wrote these tax scams into law. They benefit only a few billionaires, which is simply wrong at a time of high deficits and pressing needs for our families. It's time to shut down these loopholes once and for all."

Today, the New York Times reported that, "Cheating now equals about 7 cents out of each dollar paid by honest taxpayers, as much as $70 billion a year, the report estimated." During her time as County Attorney, Klobuchar's office has successfully prosecuted a number of high-profile tax evasion cases.
