Whitehouse Brings Message of Change to South County

Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate Sheldon Whitehouse met with about 150 South County-area residents at a community dinner at the Elks Lodge in Wakefield Sunday night to discuss ways to bring real change to Washington, D.C. and lower costs for health care.

"We live in a time of enormous challenges in health care - and great opportunities," Whitehouse said. "George Bush and the Republicans in Congress are writing laws that help the lobbyists, the insurance companies, and the pharmaceutical industry - everyone but the people who need help the most: our seniors, working men and women, and our children. I'm running for Senate because we need people in Washington who will never stop fighting for Rhode Island families."

Whitehouse is hosting a series of community dinners all over the state to listen to Rhode Islanders' thoughts and ideas on a broad range of issues, including health care, retirement security, and the war in Iraq. Sunday night's dinner was the fourth in that series, following equally crowded and successful meetings in East Providence on January 17, Woonsocket on January 30, and Warwick on February 9.
