The Health Care Crisis

We've been hearing Members of Congress talk about the health care crisis for years, but nothing gets done. Health care costs are escalating. Families are paying more for health insurance. And each year, more people are left uninsured, where they are one health care problem away from bankruptcy.

My number one priority in the United States Senate will be to take on the special interests and create a better health care system. We need comprehensive reform to lower costs, provide all families with insurance, and improve our health and medical treatment.

A few years ago, here in Rhode Island, I helped create the Quality Institute to study health care problems—to focus on how we could improve quality care, lower costs, and thus have the reources to expand coverage. And while we don't have all the answers, we're making real progress.

We are willing to develop the kind of information technology that will lower health care costs. We are working on ways to reduce medical errors that currently lead to literally thousands of needless injuries and deaths. We are working to reduce drug costs with electronic prescriptions. People as different as Patrick Kennedy and Newt Gingrich have pointed to our work as a model for the nation.

I believe we must solve our health care crisis. I believe we can lower health care costs for our families, make sure no child goes without care, and make sure every senior citizen gets affordable prescription drug coverage. The answers are out there. Congress may not know it. But a lot of good people in this country do.
