Statement of Former Attorney General Sheldon Whitehouse on Today's Lead Paint Jury Verdict

Former Attorney General and Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate Sheldon Whitehouse released the following statement on today's jury verdict in the state's lawsuit against three former lead paint manufacturers:

"At long last, the Rhode Island children suffering from lead poisoning have won a battle," Whitehouse said. "These companies intentionally and deliberately used toxic levels of lead in our homes, and this verdict sends a clear message to them and to any industry that harms our children: in Rhode Island, we will not sit by quietly. We will fight, and we will win. My heart and soul has been in this case since we started it, and I am overjoyed at the jury's verdict. I congratulate Attorney General Patrick Lynch and his entire team of litigators for this major, important victory in the fight against lead poisoning."

In 1999, then-Attorney General Whitehouse launched a lawsuit against paint companies and argued that they should help pay to clean up the lead paint that was poisoning many Rhode Island children.
