Pelosi Statement on Hurricane Katrina Insurance
House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on a U.S. District Court's decision that a Gulf Coast couple cannot collect damages from a Hurricane Katrina storm surge:
"As we approach the one year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, we must continue to work to ensure the needs of the survivors are met. Insurance companies are central to the efforts of survivors to rebuild their lives. Policyholders rightfully expected that their insurance would be there in their time of need. Democrats believe that when people buy insurance, their faith that the insurance will be there after a storm must not be misplaced.
"Insurance policies should not make arbitrary distinctions between wind and water damage. That is why Congressman Gene Taylor and House Democrats are proposing insurance reforms that will help homeowners to purchase the insurance they need, and that their insurance will cover all hurricane damage."
