Statement of the Hon. Rosa L. DeLauro

FDA Pending Approval of Plan B

- Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3) today issued the following statement on FDA's announcement regarding the pending approval of Plan B for use over-the-counter to women 18 and older.

"FDA has delayed over-the-counter sales of Plan B for years, despite the approval of medical experts, top medical journals, and careers scientists within the agency. With no reasonable medical evidence to support the FDA's delay, the agency appeared to be operating under an ideological agenda that undermined science and the public health.

"Today's announcement appears to be a positive one - a sign that Dr. von Eschenbach wants to move beyond the approval of Plan B and address the myriad public health issues facing FDA. Yet I question the age stipulation put on this pending approval. What is the science informing this stipulation?

"The FDA must not allow ideology to supersede public health. And it must not use the approval of Plan B as a political game."
