High Summer Gas Prices Another Example of Bush Administration's Misplaced Priorities, Says DeLauro

- Urges Congress to consider legislation before breaking for summer recess -

- Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3) today said that the Bush administration's failure to address high gas prices facing consumers in Connecticut and around the country are the result of the Administration's misplaced priorities. According to AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report, gas prices in DeLauro's district have reached the highest recorded by the organization - $3.19 for a gallon of regular unleaded. Data compiled by Democrats in Congress show these prices - which, on average are more than double for gas than in 2001 - will cost families with one driver an increase of $686.15 and families with two drivers an increase of $1,372.30 per year.

"The Bush administration and Congressional Republicans have failed to bring up comprehensive energy reform or any piece of legislation for that matter that would lower gas prices, opting instead to give massive subsidies to the oil and gas industry. These misplaced priorities mean that consumers are again facing record prices this summer," said DeLauro. "With family budgets already stretched to the limit with rising health care and education costs and wages that have been stagnant for five years, addressing these gas prices should be a priority for the Bush administration and Congressional Republicans. With two weeks left in the session before Congress breaks for August, I urge the Republican leadership to take action to reduce gas prices for consumers."
