Statement of the Hon. Rosa L. DeLauro Mid-Session Budget Review

- Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3) today issued the following statement after the Office of Management and Budget released its annual mid-session budget review, and the Bush Administration celebrated a projected budget deficit of $296 billion in Fiscal Year 2006 (which ends September 30). DeLauro is a member of the House Budget Committee.

"Only the Bush Administration and his Congressional allies would celebrate a federal deficit of $300 billion - the fourth-largest in our nation's history. Since President Bush took office, he has turned a $5.6 trillion projected budget surplus into a crushing debt - debt that will have to be paid by our children. Congressional Republicans have supported this fiscal disaster by voting five times to raise the national debt - increasing our debt from $5.9 trillion in 2000 to $9.6 trillion today.

"And while creating this new debt, the Republicans have done nothing to lower gas prices, lower the cost of health care or boost salaries for middle-class Americans. Today's announcement by the president offers no solutions and provides no long-term plan to improve our nation's fiscal situation."
