Rejecting criticism that she won't be able to compete in rural Nevada, Senate Minority Leader Dina Titus launched her bid for the 2006 governor's race Sunday in a Minden park.

Titus, a Las Vegas Democrat, said she is in the race because she loves Nevada and wants to move the state forward, while keeping government intrusion into people's lives at a minimum.

"The role of government should be to educate your children, lock up the bad guys and provide for the common good," she said. "Then it should get out of the way."

Titus spoke to a group of about 40 Douglas County Democrats in a county where Republicans outnumber Democrats 2-to-1.

It was her start to shed a liberal Democrat persona that her critics claim and to reach out to areas of the state outside of her home Clark County.

"Some people want to yank us to the far right and some people want to push us to the left," she said. "I just want to move us forward.

"Nevada should not be at the bottom of every good list and the top of every bad list."
