Statement Regarding Speaker Richard Perkins

Statement

The Speaker called to inform me the morning of September 21st that he has decided not to seek the Democratic nomination for Governor in 2006.

Speaker Perkins is a true gentleman and I deeply appreciate the courtesy of his call. He has served the people of Nevada with distinction and will undoubtedly continue to do so. Both as a law enforcement professional and as a member of the Nevada State Assembly, his career has been exemplary and every one of us has benefited from his work. I know that whatever path Richard chooses to take, he will continue to display the energy and thoughtful leadership that have characterized his life of service to our state.

For you and me, along with all of our supporters and friends across Nevada, this news changes everything. Together, we must redouble our efforts. I was recently characterized by one noted blog writer as "The Democrat in the Democratic Primary." That distinction is now crystal clear.

To win the upcoming battle for Governor, chart the course our state will steer into the future and fight for the soul of what the Democratic Party stands for, I am going to need your help.

This race reflects what is happening across the Democratic Party in America. Do we offer a clear, distinct choice and vision or do we try to defeat the Republicans by being more like them.
