The start of Judge Samuel Alito's U.S. Supreme Court confirmation hearing today prompted Sen. Dina Titus, D-Las Vegas, to launch a video ad campaign calling on Nevada voters to elect a governor who will protect a woman's right to privacy, even if the federal government does not.
Titus, the only pro-choice Democratic candidate for governor, released a web-based ad Monday asking Nevadans to stop the assault on personal rights by choosing a governor who will keep government out of the personal lives of its citizens.
"Jim Gibson has said that if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, he will impose his will and personal views on women," Titus said. "I do not know a single person who likes abortion. Whenever it is an option, there is always a tragedy involved. That kind of personal, intimate, and difficult decision should be made by a woman with her doctor, her family, and her God; it should not be made in the halls of government."
Alito, who authored a legal strategy in the 1980's to overturn Roe v. Wade, has been described as one of the most controversial conservative nominees since Richard Bork. Alito would replace U.S. Supreme Court Judge Sandra Day O'Connor, who often voted in favor of individual rights.
Gibson has said, "I'm never going to be putting myself in a position where the things I really think and believe are at odds with what we enact." Titus believes it is the job of government to help improve the lives of its citizens, rather than intrude on their personal lives and choices.
"As I have said many times, government needs to do what it does best: educate our kids, lock up the bad guys, provide needed services, and then get out of the way," Titus said.
