Titus Gets Standing Ovation At Board Of Regents Meeting

Senator Dina Titus received a standing ovation at a Board of Regents meeting Friday after delivering a speech on higher education in Nevada.

In her 15-minute speech to regents, Titus touched on the need to create a seamless web of learning between K-12 and higher education and said that the education of our next generation of Nevadans needs to be the highest priority.

"Make no mistake about it, the challenges ahead are complicated and require new ideas as well as experience with the current system," Titus said. "As a state Senator, I have been an active participant in the struggles and successes we have had working to manage competing priorities and fairly distribute revenues while keeping taxes low."

Titus came out against the TABOR/TASC initiative saying it will create funding shortages in higher education. She said in order to meet the state's growing demand for higher education, she would:

• Work toward getting more funding for higher education, while allowing campuses to keep a greater share of the tuition revenue they generate;

• Generate more money for the university system by increasing out-of-state tuition and use a major part of the revenue to educate teachers, nurses, and first responders; and

• Save taxpayer dollars and speed needed construction of campus facilities by eliminating the Public Works Board.

"Indeed, lives are changed by education," Titus said. "When individuals are better educated, our culture blooms, our economy prospers and our democracy flourishes."
