Senator Dina Titus Encourages Democrats To Protest Bush Budget And All Those Who Support It

State Sen. Dina Titus, D-Las Vegas, today said President George Bush's proposed budget has punishing effects on veterans, seniors, students, and struggling families.

"This budget is offensive and is an insult to the veterans who have done so much for this country," Titus said. "It is simply unacceptable that this administration is taking our land sales money, and slashing aid that helps children, seniors, disabled Nevadans, and needy families, while beefing up the budget for Yucca Mountain."

The Republican budget package nearly doubles health insurance co-payments for veterans, slashes $8 million in aid to technical schools in Nevada, cuts college student aid by $2.1 billion, and takes away $107 million in food assistance from Nevada seniors. The Bush budget will also take land sale profits from Nevada to pay down the deficit and pump $544 million into Yucca Mountain.

Titus encouraged more people to involve themselves in the political process by speaking out and letting Republican Congressional delegates know that Nevadans will not support an administration that continually overlooks them. "We must stop the Gibbons-Bush agenda before it ruins Nevada."

"Today is a chance for Democrats to unite and fight for the working men and women of Nevada," Titus said, "It's time we fight for the veterans who fought for us and for the seniors who once took care of us. We feel that the Republican Congress and the administration have let us down and we won't stand for it."

Titus, who is running for governor, is promising to improve education, the economy and the environment. She said the Republican budget leaves Nevada hurting in all of those areas.
