Dina Titus Urges Developer Of State-Of-The-Art Solar Plant To Tap Nevada Expertise

State Senator Dina Titus today called on the developers of the world's third-largest solar plant to employ Nevada's construction expertise and technical skills to build and operate the 64-megawatt Nevada Solar One plant in Boulder City.

"Developing Nevada's abundant renewable energy resources is one of the keys to our state's economic future and our nation's energy independence," said Titus, who has championed renewable energy legislation in the Nevada Legislature. "It only makes sense that the first commercial solar plant in the nation in 14 years and the first ever in Nevada should tap Nevada's construction, engineering and technical skills in building and operating this showcase plant. Nevada gave considerable tax breaks and incentives to this company. The very least they can do is hire Nevada workers."

The Nevada Commission on Economic Development last year approved reductions in property and sales taxes as part of the state's strategy for attracting businesses that will strengthen and diversify Nevada's economy.

"The U.S. Department of Energy has reported that Nevada is capable of producing more than 600,000 megawatts of electricity through concentrating solar power, and UNLV has worked with Solargenix Energy to help develop this technology," Titus said. "I believe Nevada Solar One represents a perfect opportunity for our construction trades, engineers and technicians to work collaboratively with Solargenix to lay the foundation for a new statewide industry that creates good jobs for Nevadans while reducing the nation's dependence on fossil fuels."
