Titus Bill On Senior Property Tax Relief Approved By Senate
CARSON CITYLegislation sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Dina Titus (D-Las Vegas) to increase property tax relief for senior citizens was unanimously approved by the State Senate today.
Titus said the purpose of the bill is to update a state property tax rebate program that provides relief for senior citizens by changing the threshold for eligibility and the amount of the rebate. Under SB 72, the value of a home eligible for the program would be increased from $87,500 to $120,000 and the liquid assets of an eligible senior would be increased from $150,000 to $205,000. The amount of the rebate would also be increased from $500 to $1000.
"While property tax rates have been skyrocketing, this program has not been updated since 1979," said Titus. "Even with the property tax relief package passed last week, there are still seniors who are struggling to pay their property taxes, as they also cope with the rising costs of prescription drugs, food and housing. This bill offers real and immediate relief to a larger number of senior citizens."
The bill was unanimously passed out of the Senate Human Resources and Education Committee in early March. Representatives of the Nevada Taxpayers Association and a number of senior citizen groups testified in favor of the bill.
