Schwarz, Walberg Spar On ‘Clean Campaign'

BATTLE CREEK — The staff of U.S. Rep. Joe Schwarz, R-Battle Creek, is delighted" with Tim Walberg's call in a letter for clean campaign, however, campaign manager Paul Egnatuck said they will not sign a pledge to that effect.

Walberg, of Tipton, is for the second time challenging Schwarz in the Republican primary for the 7th District seat in Congress, this time in a two-man race with the latter as incumbent. There were four others in the race in 2004.

"Republican primary elections are about records, ideas and ideals. You and I will contrast on many issues," wrote Walberg. "We can and should discuss these issues so the interests of the voters are best served."

He continued, "I believe the families of Michigan's 7th District will benefit from an election that debates our positions and the issues rather than a race that is mostly negative mudslinging and personal attacks . . . That is why I'm asking you to join me in pledging to run a clean campaign. Let us both agree that debating the issues, our public records . . . is fair and reasonable, but engaging in personal attacks or attacks against family members are not."
