Tipton, MI- Congressman Joe Schwarz voted to keep pork-barrel projects in the House Agriculture Appropriations Bill. Schwarz voted to keep a $229,000 earmark for an Iowa Dairy Education program [Roll Call Vote 190, 5-23-06] with one goal being "recruiting dairy families from other regions to Northeast Iowa" [Americans for Prosperity description]. Schwarz also voted to keep an earmark for Hydroponic Tomato Research at Ohio State University [Roll Call Vote 191, 5-23-06] and taxpayer-funded advertising for wine makers [Roll Call Vote 192, 5-23-06].

"Governor Granholm's economic policies are doing enough to drive people out of Michigan. Congressman Schwarz should not be spending federal tax dollars to encourage people to move to Northeast Iowa to milk cows," said Walberg.

In response to Congressman Schwarz's vote to give Ohio State University an $180,000 earmark for their Hydroponic Tomato Program, Walberg stated, "Wolverine state taxpayers should not be forced to pay for an Ohio State University tomato program. As a conservative Michigan man, I would sack that earmark if given the opportunity."

"Congressman Schwarz's votes for pork-barrel projects and his recent vote against balancing the budget by 2011 is why voters are tired of the status quo," said Walberg campaign manager Joe Wicks.

"Unlike Congressman Schwarz, I will fight against pork-barrel spending and for reducing spending to balance the budget," added Walberg.
