DURBIN'S STATEMENT IN OPPOSITION TO GULF OF MEXICO ENERGY BILL

[Washington, D.C.] - U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) today issued the following statement after the Senate passed S.3711, the Gulf of Mexico Energy Bill:

"The Senate passed a bill today that is not the answer to America's rising gasoline costs or energy needs."

"America's energy security demands a comprehensive solution. Any federal action to increase fossil fuel production must be coupled with policies that reduce demand through energy efficiency, increase the use of alternative fuels and encourage energy conservation."

"The U.S. does not have enough domestic oil to meet our demand. We will not reach energy sufficiency by drilling for more. Not only is it short-sighted, it will fail. Our natural resources are finite and the success of our nation depends - as it always has - on our ability to be innovative and develop technologies to use our energy resources wisely."

"Americans believe that we can and we must control our energy future. With our innovative spirit and technological know how, we have an opportunity to enhance our security, create American jobs and become truly energy independent."
