Governor Kaine Appeals FEMA Decision

- Requests reconsideration for Individual Assistance Program -

RICHMOND - Governor Timothy M. Kaine today announced that Virginia is appealing the Federal Emergency Management Agency's decision to deny individual disaster assistance for Virginians affected by the June and July severe weather.

"Despite the generosity of voluntary agencies and the outstanding efforts of all the county and city governments, hundreds of families still face significant financial challenges to repair their homes," the Governor said.

The Governor originally requested the Individual Assistance Program for the counties of Alleghany, Arlington, Augusta, Botetourt, Fairfax and Montgomery and the independent cities of Alexandria and Salem on June 30. FEMA denied the request earlier this week.

Virginia did receive approval of Public Assistance for government infrastructure and certain private nonprofits for the counties of Arlington, Bath, Botetourt, Craig, Dickenson, Fairfax, Floyd, Henry, Highland, King George and Rockbridge and also in the city of Alexandria.
