Walberg: Schwarz Wrong On Amnesty For Millions Of Illegal Aliens

Tipton, MI- Conservative Republican Congressional Candidate Tim Walberg called Congressman Joe Schwarz's support of amnesty for illegal aliens "out of touch" with the desires of mainstream America.

The Battle Creek Enquirer reported on May 29, 2006 that "Schwarz said he would support the Senate approach for dividing illegal immigrants into three categories based on how long they have been in the country" and he said "more than a dozen other House Republicans have softened their positions on illegal immigrants since December and would support the Senate approach" [Battle Creek Enquirer 5/29/06]. The Senate's "three categories" approach allows illegal immigrants who have been in the country for more than five years to remain in the country [Bloomberg 5/25/06] and become citizens [Reuters 5/28/06].

"Joe Schwarz's support for amnesty is out of touch with mainstream America," said Walberg. "We are a nation of laws and illegal immigrants are lawbreakers who have not earned the privileges of United States citizenship. Illegal immigration is a burden on taxpayers and a threat to our national security. The federal government has a duty to secure the border, not grant amnesty and Social Security benefits to people who illegally enter our country," said Walberg.

"America welcomes people from around the world to legally come here to work, speak English, realize their dreams, and become American. We must demand people sign the guest book and legally enter the American dream," Walberg added.

"Congressman Schwarz's plan for illegal aliens includes not just granting amnesty, but also giving Social Security benefits to illegal immigrants. Even worse his plan would allow illegal aliens to pay taxes only three of the last five years. It's remarkable that he supports a two-year tax holiday for illegal aliens, but has supported higher taxes on everyone else," said Walberg campaign manager Joe Wicks.

Tim Walberg supports securing the border and requiring all foreign workers to obtain a temporary, legal work permit. Walberg strongly opposes amnesty.
