Protect Our Coastal Environment, Strengthen Emergency Preparedness

Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath should remind us all that we must be better prepared to face the threat of catastrophic hurricanes. We must do better, especially given our vulnerability here in Florida. Many Florida victims of the 2004 hurricane season are still waiting for relief and help. The federal response to emergencies must be more efficient, more effective, and decidedly more immediate.

Florida's unique environment must also be protected. It is not only an important part of our quality of life, but our fishing and tourism industries depend on it. We must not allow off-shore oil drilling. We must do more to stem the problems associated with red tide. The Mote Marine Lab, where I will serve as chairman next year, is a world leader in oceanic aquaculture research. We'll keep working to understand and protect our coastal environment.
