McCaul Votes to Protect Traditional Marriage, America's Pledge of Allegiance and Lives of the Unborn

This past week Congressman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) took the important steps towards protecting traditional marriage, America's Pledge of Allegiance and the lives of the unborn by voting on key pieces of legislation this week. McCaul voted in support of the Marriage Protection Amendment as well as voting to support President Bush's veto of stem cell legislation.

"There's a moral line that we as a nation cannot cross," stated Congressman Michael McCaul. He went on to say, "With this specific stem cell bill, our government would have provided federal funding for scientists to create life only to destroy it. That is unacceptable."

The United States House of Representatives and Senate passed legislation which aims at expanding research into embryonic stem cells, which ultimately would have destroyed the lives created from those cells. However, for the first time since taking office, President Bush vetoed the legislation, a move Congressman McCaul fully supports.

"We as a nation must move forward with stem cell research which protects human life. The technology is out there and still in its early stages, but it has great potential and that's where we should focus our research," stated McCaul.

McCaul, who represents the Tenth Congressional District of Texas, also voted in favor of the American family by supporting the Marriage Protection Amendment. Despite the legislation failing to get two thirds of the votes needed for a constitutional amendment, McCaul says the vote was a sign of great progress.

"Today's vote shows that members of Congress from both parties recognize the importance of preserving our nation's tradition of marriage," said Congressman Michael McCaul. He went on to say, "Adding an amendment to the Constitution is an enormous challenge, but protecting the socially indispensable institution of marriage is certainly worth Congress' efforts to see it pass. Overwhelming evidence shows that the sacred union of marriage is by far the best environment for raising children, and that a large majority of Americans want it protected."

The Marriage Protection Amendment simply states that marriage in the United States consists of the union of a man and a woman. The bill text is drafted to ensure that the democratic process at the state level will decide the allocation of benefits and privileges traditionally associated with marriage.

In another important vote, McCaul showed his strong support for keeping the words, "under God" in America's Pledge of Allegiance.

"Our nation and its laws are based on the Ten Commandments," stated McCaul. He went on to say, "By keeping these words in the Pledge of Allegiance, we are showing our respect not only to God but to those who founded our country."
