Former Sen. Roscoe Dixon Found Guilty Of Taking Bribes

A jury in Memphis on Thursday afternoon convicted former state Sen. Roscoe Dixon of taking bribes in the Tennessee Waltz corruption sting.

Witnesses said he took $9,500 in bribes to help the bogus E-Cycle firm set up by the FBI for favorable legislation.

The jury deliberated a day and a half after five days of testimony that included video of Dixon taking money.

Dixon said the money was gifts from friends and denied doing anything illegal for the cash.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Sen. Jim Bryson said, "When elected officials destroy the public trust they will be severely punished. That is why I led the effort to not allow indicted Sens. Bowers (D-Memphis) and Crutchfield (D-Chattanooga) to participate in the ethics special session.

"Gov. Bredesen was silent on that issue and he defended Sen. Ophelia Ford (D-Memphis) when she was removed from the Senate due to a stolen election. Tennessee deserves a government worthy of the people of this state and that requires a governor willing to demand honest, ethical behavior from members of his own party.?
