Women's Issues

For 24 years I have been an unwavering advocate for women's issues in the Legislature and have been recognized for my commitment and effectiveness by the Memphis Women's Political Caucus.

I have always believed that the decision to terminate a pregnancy is one of the most serious decisions a woman can make. I know it is not a decision made lightly. It certainly is not a decision that should be made by the legislature. I will continue to ensure that it remains just that - a woman's decision.

* I passed the anti-stalking law, and legislation punishing rape by spouse as sexual battery.
* I passed a rape victim's Bill of Rights and worked consistently to increase the number of females working in state agencies.
* I helped create and served on the Women's Suffrage Commission to celebrate women's right to vote. I led the effort to memorialize Tennessee 's role in the passage of the 19 th amendment with a sculpture installed in the State Capitol.
* Too many divorced women lose health insurance. I will support women in this personal injustice.
* I passed the women's restroom equity bill in Tennessee.
* I co-sponsored the Families First program that provides day care and job training.
* Pre-Kindergarten and after school programs have been funded through the Tennessee Lottery. I specifically allowed money for these programs in the Constitutional Amendment that I drafted. This is the primary source of funding for these programs.
