July 13 - A Message From Hank
07/13/2006

My friends:

As you know, I am running to unseat Cynthia McKinney in Georgia's
4th Congressional District. With just a few days until the July 18th Democratic primary, I would like to take a moment to share some of my final thoughts with you.

These are not easy times. We are at war in an increasingly hostile world. We are faced with a swiftly growing national debt and unprecedented economic competition from abroad. Gas prices are higher than they have been in thirty years, and we have abused our environment with reckless abandon for too long. Our schools are underfunded and our medicine is unaffordable. The most recent eruption of violence in the Middle East has been deeply troubling for us all.

But we are not helpless. Together, we can find solutions. We face problems and we shall overcome them if we decide today to fix what is broken, heal what is wounded, and plan for tomorrow.

We must restore reason to foreign policy. We must act now to ensure that an environmental crisis does not threaten our health and our happiness. We must empower our teachers and schools with more resources and more autonomy to address the unique needs of every child. We must strive for harmony as our society becomes more and more diverse. We must provide for our children, our elders, our veterans - the America of yesterday and of the future.

There is much to be done. Friends and neighbors: I ask for the opportunity to work for the betterment of our district and our country. I will serve you with integrity, energy, and conviction. I will be your representative in the best sense of the word; I pledge to be accessible and connected to the complex and immediate needs of our community.

In these uncertain days, we are tempted by fear, resignation, fatalism. But we choose hope, commitment, and progress. The rejuvenation of the American spirit is not just a talking point. As we bear the weight of today's challenges, it is what we must tirelessly pursue. We have faced uncertainty before, and we have always risen to the occasion.I am excited about the opportunity to do my part.

Together, we can overcome the counterproductive politics of polarization and divisiveness that stand in the way of progress in Washington. Together, we can strengthen our district, our nation, our world. Send me to Congress. I will get things done.

I ask for your support in the Democratic primary on July 18th and the chance to serve you with distinction in the United States Congress.

Sincerely,
Hank Johnson
Candidate for Congress
Georgia's Fourth Congressional District
