Statement On The U.S. Department Of Justice "Pre-Clearing" Georgia's New Congressional Districts

(SYLVANIA, GA) Max Burns, Congressman for the old 12th District, released the following statement regarding yesterday's announcement that the U.S. Department of Justice "pre-cleared" Georgia's new Congressional Districts. Burns announced on May 30, 2005, that he would seek the new open 12th District, making him the only announced candidate in the race:

"I am pleased the Justice Department signed off on the new map, restoring common-sense into Georgia?s Congressional representation. As I have said all along, the new map rids the state of the partisan gerrymandering that split a part counties and communities of interest, allowing the Georgia Congressional delegation to better represent their constituents in Washington. The new map is fair and equitable for all Georgians, and will allow them to choose their representative instead of having their representative chosen for them."

"I look forward to the campaign and working with old friends and new ones across Georgia's New 12th District as we work together to meet the needs of our communities and provide a strong common-sense, conservative voice in Washington."
