Rounds chosen by governors' group

SEDONA, Ariz. (AP) — South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds was elected chairman of the Western Governors' Association on Tuesday, promising to focus on issues under the slogan of "Making the West the Best."

Gov. Dave Freudenthal of Wyoming was elected vice chairman of the independent, nonprofit organization that represents the governors of 19 states and three U.S. territories in the Pacific.

Rounds succeeds Gov. Janet Napolitano of Arizona.

"The West is already the best in many ways, but we are no longer unchallenged," Rounds said in a statement.

"Where we are ahead ... we must stay ahead. Where we are behind, we must move faster forward than every other region of the world.

"Where we are being challenged ... we must meet each challenge with greater innovation, more productivity and inspiring motivation for ourselves and our next generations."

Rounds said he will emphasize three areas during the next year: accelerating energy independence in Western states, creating the best work force in the world and leading the world in technology.
