Statement by U.S. Representative Diana DeGette on Voting Against the Paris Hilton Tax Break
- Republican Estate Tax Plan Helps A Hand Full of Millionaires; Has Absolutely No Impact on Most Americans -
Today, U.S. Representative Diana DeGette (D-CO) issued the following statement regarding her vote against the Republican's Permanent Estate Tax Relief Act of 2006, H.R. 5368.
"The Republicans voted to give nearly $800 billion in tax giveaways that will benefit less than one half of one percent of the wealthiest taxpayers. They did this in the same week that they shelved the first increase in the minimum wage in a decade. Raising the minimum wage would help 6.6 million American workers, including 760,000 single mothers. Cutting the estate tax would help only the very wealthiest few.
"We could use that $800 billion to pay down the national debt, fully fund the Medicare Part D prescription drug plan, or help pay for the War on Terror. Instead, Republicans used that money for another tax cut to the wealthiest in society."
