STATEMENT OF U.S. SENATOR DURBIN ON RESIGNATION OF TRANSPORTATION SECRETARY NORM MINETA

[Washington, D.C.] - Assistant Democratic Leader Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) today issued the following statement after the White House announced that Norm Mineta will be stepping down as Transportation Secretary.

"Secretary Mineta is a good friend and has been a tremendous ally for over 20 years. When we served together in the House, Norm Mineta recognized the need to invest in our nation's transportation infrastructure and fought tirelessly for funding for roads, bridges, highways, transit, and high speed rail. When he served as Commerce Secretary under President Clinton, he played an integral role in crafting an economic policy that gave this nation its strongest period of economic growth in three decades. And, as Secretary of Transportation for the current Administration, he helped Illinois make significant inroads in advancing their transportation infrastructure, leading the charge in the development of several local projects, including the O'Hare modernization program."

"I am honored to have worked with Secretary Mineta and wish him the best as he prepares to leave the public arena for private life."
