Gov. Rounds Provides Emergency Flood Assistance for Marshall and Roberts Counties

PIERRE, S.D. - Gov. Mike Rounds announced today the South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) will provide $137,500 in emergency flood assistance to Marshall County and $112,500 to Roberts County to help officials repair county and township roads.

"Heavy winter snowfall, followed by a wet spring has resulted in flooding, leaving widespread damage to local roads throughout Marshall and RobertsCounties," said Gov. Rounds. "It's a significant problem that needs a solution for the residents in the area."

An inspection determined the damage does not meet requirements for federal emergency funding. As an alternative, Gov. Rounds directed the SDDOT to provide assistance through its existing budget.

"These are unique situations," said Kevin Tveidt, Deputy Secretary, SDDOT. "Several agencies of state government looked at a number of ways to assist Marshall and RobertsCounty residents. The governor decided flood assistance would provide the greatest benefit, and SDDOT is happy to be able to help."

The state funds will be given to Marshall and RobertsCounties to pay for gravel and rehabilitation costs for the damaged county and township roads. In addition to addressing the immediate concern, Gov. Rounds says he will work with the county commissioners on a plan to provide long-term drainage solutions.
