Mayor Ray C. Nagin
New Orleans City Hall
1300 Perdido Street
New Orleans, LA 70112
Dear Mayor Nagin:
"As Members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, we are writing to express our concern about the mysterious death of Jazz pianist and composer Hilton Ruiz on June 6, 2006.
"As you are likely aware, Mr. Ruiz, 54, was in New Orleans since May 18, 2006 to promote a CD benefiting victims of Hurricane Katrina. On May 19, Ruiz was taken to East Jefferson General Hospital after a fall that led him into a coma state, ultimately causing his death.
"As of today, the investigations into his fall have not been clear. Reports from the New Orleans police indicated that the cause of his death was due to a fall; however, early reports stated that Mr. Ruiz might have been beaten.
"Hilton Ruiz was considered one of the most versatile musicians who excelled in many genres, included including Latin Jazz, Afro-Cuban and Blues. Given the tragic circumstances that led up to this legendary artist's death, we urge you to further investigate this issue and share with us your findings.
"Thank you very much for your attention."
