Wicker: Al-Zarqawi's Death Is Victory in War on Terrorism, Advance of Democracy in Region

WICKER: AL-ZARQAWI'S DEATH IS VICTORY IN WAR ON TERRORISM, ADVANCE OF DEMOCRACY IN REGION

Rep. Roger Wicker says the death of Al Qaeda's top operative in Iraq is a significant victory in the war on terrorism and a positive step toward advancing democracy in the region.

The news that Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi was killed in an airstrike near Baghdad means a "savage, brutal terrorist will no longer be a threat to innocent men, women, and children and coalition troops in Iraq," Wicker said. "His murderous days are over."

"This is a both an operational victory and a symbolic victory against the forces of evil. We have eliminated the mastermind behind Al Qaeda's activities in Iraq and struck at the heart of the terrorist network responsible for killing thousands of people. His death is also a boost to the new democratic government in Iraq and should strengthen its efforts to bring more stability and order to the country."

The Congressman said it would be a mistake to expect an end to violence in Iraq as a result of this successful mission, but "there is no question that Al-Zarqawi's death is a devastating blow to the enemies of peace and democracy in Iraq."

Rep. Wicker said American and Iraqi forces should also be praised for their persistence and determination in staying on the trail of Al-Zarqawi. "Their actions today raise hope that we might be a step closer to bringing stability and peace to the region."
