LUCAS STATEMENT ON DEATH OF AL-ZARQAWI

U.S. Third District Congressman Frank Lucas made the following statement on the news that U.S. forces had killed al-Qaeda leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the mastermind behind hundreds of Iraqi bombings, kidnappings, and hostage beheadings:

"I would have preferred al-Zarqawi be caught, convicted, and brought to face his crimes in an Iraqi court. But justice has been served. He will never again organize the bombing of American or Iraqi soldiers. He will never again authorize the kidnapping and beheading of innocent civilians. The al-Qaeda terrorist network has been dealt a severe blow.

"I think it's also significant to note that our forces were aided by tips from Iraqis. The people of Iraq want peace, and they understand that murderous thugs like al-Zarqawi and his ilk stand in the way of a free and prosperous Iraq. I applaud not only our brave American soldiers who have so tirelessly worked to hunt down the terrorist cells in Iraq, but also the Iraqi people, who have once again shown their desire to live in freedom and in peace.

"The elimination of al-Zarqawi is an important milestone in the Global War on Terror, but there will be difficult days ahead. I urge the people of Iraq to maintain their resolve as we continue the fight against terrorism."
