Congressman Sanders Joins Legal Effort to Stop Administration's Warrantless Wiretapping Program

Congressman Bernie Sanders joined Congressman John Conyers (D-MI), ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, and 70 other Representatives in filing a legal brief seeking to end President Bush's secret domestic spying program. The members filed an amicus brief in two federal courts currently reviewing challenges to the National Security Agencies warrantless wiretapping program. The cases are American Civil Liberties Union v. NSA/CSS in Detroit, and Center for Constitutional Rights v. Bush in New York.

Sanders said, "The need for investigation into President Bush's secret domestic spying program has become even more urgent in light of today's announcement that the Department of Justice has cancelled its investigation into the program. I am also extremely concerned by the news that the Administration has been secretly collecting the phone call records of tens of millions of Americans. It is abundantly clear that we need a real investigation into the actions of this Administration. We simply cannot continue to allow this Administration to disregard the law and the constitutional rights of all Americans."
